Ann Arbor, Michigan: Complete 1933 Goudey Baseball Set + 100 1909-11 Tobacco cards featuring Babe Ruth (5), Lou Gehrig (4), & Ty Cobb (2)

Incredible 1933 Goudey complete set (completed by son of original owner) and large lot of tobacco cards acquired by Throwback Sports Cards

1933 Goudeys (Ruth, Gehrig) + T206 (Cobb)

A collector named Rob reached out about selling some of his duplicates from his baseball card collection. He stated he had some Goudeys (including Babe Ruth & Lou Gehrig!) plus some tobacco cards- namely a T206 Ty Cobb! Naturally, we had to know more about what else he had. A meeting was set up at Rob’s business. Upon entering his office, multiple binders were open with hundreds of Goudey and Tobacco cards. Rob shared that his Grandfather grew up in Maryland in the early 1900s and acquired all the T205 and T206 tobacco cards during that time. They had been in his family ever since. He also told us how his father collected Goudey cards as a child, pulling many from this collection from packs. During the 1970’s, Rob discovered his father’s Goudey collection and decided to complete the set. His grew up in the Metro Detroit area and he went to many card shows during that period. After several years, he was finally able to complete the set of 239 cards (no Nap Lajoie, as it wasn’t printed until the next year). Rob amassed a fair amount of duplicates, including an extra Babe Ruth and 2 Lou Gehrigs. He also had an extra T206 Ty Cobb red portrait he was willing to part with. A cash deal was struck for his duplicates.

Of course we inquired about the 1933 Goudey complete set and the rest of the tobacco cards, but Rob indicated he wasn’t ready to part with them yet. We told him to keep us in mind when he was ready. About 6 months later, Rob called us back, saying now was the time to sell. We met up the next day, and after some back and forth negotiating, the deal was completed! Acquiring this collection was beyond exciting, as it is not often that you find Goudey complete sets or tobacco cards; especially in one collection!
