There are few names in baseball who carry a more mythical connotation with them than "Shoeless" Joe Jackson. Part of it is because of the nickname, and the other part of what could have been. Legend has it that Jackson was trying to break in a new pair of cleats during a mill game, but he got blisters so bad he end up having to play barefoot. This site caused a spectator to yell "You shoeless son of a gun!" And the nickname stuck. Jackson is widely regarded as one of the premier hitters of all time. Even Ty Cobb said Jackson was "The greatest natural hitter I have ever seen". Jackson played for the Athletics, Naps, and Whitesox, and everywhere he went he hit. In 1911 he hit .408 for the Naps. Jackson's legacy took an unfortunate turn during the 1919 World Series, when he and 7 other teammates got involved with gamblers and decided to throw the World Series. This came to be known as the "Black Sox Scandal". There was some question as to the extent Jackson actually took part in the fix, as he set a then series record with 12 hits. Jackson admitted to taking money but not throwing any games. Whatever the case, the commissioner of baseball imposed a lifetime ban of "Shoeless Joe". Even in his last season as a professional, Jackson batted .382. His lifetime batting average of .356 is still a record. In 2025, MLB pardoned him, which now makes him eligible for the Hall of Fame.
