Sports card collection inherited from original owner included hundreds of 1930s Goudey, Batter-Up, and Double Play cards including Ruth, Gehrig, Feller, Greenberg, and Foxx

Some emails can really get your heart racing, and that was certainly the case with this collection. Michael emailed us for a free appraisal regarding his vintage card collection. He explained that he inherited some 1930s cards from a family member, and was trying to get a better understanding of what he had prior to selling. Immediately we asked for more information regarding the collection. Michael stated that a great uncle had recently passed away and left his card collection to him and his sister. He rattled off a few names he recognized; Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Hank Greenberg, Bob Feller, Ted Williams- pretty much every big name from the 1930s!

Michael did some of his own internet research on values, but was having trouble determining condition of collection. This is a very common for people not in the hobby, and we assured him we would be happy to help. High resolution pictures of the key cards were sent, and we got to work. Each card was documented (with estimated grades) and researched, and an appraisal of the entire collection was provided. Michael felt comfortable a deal would get done, so we scheduled a meeting to review the collection in person. The condition of most the cards were even better in person, and our offer went up accordingly. After a bit of negotiating, a deal was struck and we went home with the entire collection!
Original owner collections from the 1930s do not come along very often. These collections are truly like time capsules, and it was fun getting a snapshot into how the original owner collected as a kid. Cards included in this collection were from 1933 Goudey, 1934 Goudey, 1934-36 Batter-Up, 1938 Goudey, and 1941 Double Play. Only a handful of ‘33s were present, but luckily one was of Babe Ruth #144! Moe Berg and Bill Terry were also included. The 1934 Goudeys were fairly rough but the crown jewel of the set, Lou Gehrig #37, was there. By far the set with the highest quantity was the Batter-Ups, and most of the key cards were there, including Foxx, Ott, Hornsby, Dean, and Gehringer.
It was very obvious that the early cards were played with and “well loved”, as many showed signs of heavy wear and creases. As the original owner got older, he must have learned to take better care of his collection; the 1938 Goudey and 1941 Play Ball cards were majestic. Most were mid to high grade. The 1938 Goudeys were some of the nicest examples we have ever handled. Names like Feller (RC), Foxx, Greenberg, Lopez, Lombardi, were all included. Most of the commons were also super sharp. The collection only contained a handful of 1941 Double Play cards (apparently the owner started to lose
interest by this time), but luckily clean Ted Williams/Jim Taylor and Jimmie Foxx/Joe Cronin cards were found.
Highlights Of The Collection:
1933 Goudey: Babe Ruth (#144), Moe Berg
1934 Goudey: Lou Gehrig (#37)
1934-36 Batter-Up: Foxx, Ott, Hornsby, Dean, Gehringer, Hubell, and Lazzeri
1938 Goudey: Feller (RC), Foxx, Greenberg, Gehringer
1941 Double Play: Ted Williams/Jim Taylor and Jimmie Foxx/Joe Cronin
