An Ypsilanti collector saved over 1000 sports cards from the 1960s, including Mantle, Ryan, Alcindor, and 250 '65 football tall boys

After hearing about the prices of vintage sports cards, Tim decided now was a good time sell his collection. He reached out to Throwback Sports Cards after discovering us on Google and seeing our 5 star rating and stellar reputation. We agreed to meet at a local library to review and catalog his collection for appraisal. His collection ranged from the mid 1960s through the early 70s. Most of the mid 60's cards were from his older cousin, who gifted them to him when they were kids. The late 60s and early 70s cards were all pulled by packs by Tim. Being a huge sports fan, especially basketball, the majority of cards from 1969 and 70 were basketball cards. Each card was reviewed and researched, and over the course of 2 meetings, a cash offer was made and we were able to acquire this amazing vintage collection. Something we appreciated was Tim had to check in on prices with his cousin, as he planned to cut him in on the sale, even though the cards were gifted to him in the 1970s.
Highlights Of The Collection
This was a very diverse collection, in that is contained cards from baseball, football, basketball, and football. The cards from the mid 60s were especially fun to got through. Included were a fair amount of 1964 Topps baseball, highlighted by Mantle, Rose, Mays, Aaron, and Koufax. The football portion was also very exciting, as there were over 250 1965 Tall Boy cards. Unfortunately Tim had previously sold the 5 (Yes- 5!) Namath rookie cards, but there was still plenty of star power, including multiple copies of Biletnikoff, Otto, Maynard, Gilchrist, Alworth, Dawson, and Kemp, plus about 100 short prints.

The late 60s and early 70s were also quite exciting. It was evident that Tim was a huge basketball fan and purchased many packs of 1969 and 70 Tall Boys. 1969 Topps had all the big cards including an Alcindor rookie, West, Chamberlain, Havlicek, and about 100 others. 1970 Topps was even more impressive, with almost 200 high grade cards, including 7 Alcindors! Tim elected to keep 2 of them but was nice enough to sell 5 to us. 1969 Topps baseball packed lots of star power, with 3 cards of Mickey Mantle, a Nolan Ryan, and 2 Reggie Jackson rookies. To round out cards from this era, we picked up a '70 Nolan Ryan, '71 Bradshaw rookie, '71 Dryden rookie, '70 Bobby Orr, 3 '70 Willie Mays, and a '70 & '71 Aaron
1965 Topps Tall Boys Football
The 1965 Topps football set is one of the most unique and classic sets of all time. It is certainly the crown jewel of 1960s football sets. The inclusion of the legendary Joe Namath rookie cards helps elevates this set in terms of popularity. The jumbo size of the cards also stands out; they are commonly referred to as "Tall Boys". Each card measures over 4.5 inches tall. The design of the front features a brightly colored background with a large image of the player. The team name is placed along the top border and the player's name and position are listed near the bottom border. The backs are divided in two sections. One part consists of the player's biography, while the other features a cartoon and interesting fact about the player.

The Joe Namath rookie card is definitely the most valuable and sought after card in the set, but many other Hall of Famers were included, such as Willie Brown (rookie), Fred Biletnikoff (rookie), George Blanda, Don Maynard, Len Dawson, and Lance Alworth. Players on each team were grouped together numerically, with the order being determined alphabetically (example : card #'s 1-22 are all Boston Patriots, while #'s 154-175 are all San Diego Chargers). The majority of the set (132) are short prints and carry premiums vs other commons. Finding these cards in high grade is difficult, as the large size made them tough to store and damaged corners and edges are common. Centering issues also plague the set.
