Satchel Paige was one of baseball’s most legendary pitchers and a true icon of the Negro Leagues. Born in 1906 in Mobile, Alabama, Paige became famous for his blazing fastball, pinpoint control, and colorful personality. He spent decades dominating hitters across the Negro Leagues, barnstorming teams, and Latin American leagues, often pitching multiple games in a single day.
In 1948, Paige broke Major League Baseball’s color barrier for pitchers when he debuted with the Cleveland Indians at age 42 (possibly older), becoming the oldest rookie in MLB history. He went on to help the Indians win the 1948 World Series and later pitched for the St. Louis Browns and Kansas City Athletics. Known for his wit and wisdom—along with his unforgettable “rules for staying young”—Satchel Paige left a lasting legacy as one of the greatest pitchers the game has ever seen. There are very few cards featuring Paige, but the ones available are in high demand.
