1953 Bowman Baseball Card Set Guide

1953 Bowman Mickey Mantle #59

Set Description

In 1953, Bowman released two separate baseball cards sets; Bowman "color" and Bowman "black and white".  It is unclear why this was done.  Some believe the "black and white" series was originally planned to be another series in the "color" set and to cut costs it was printed in black and white, but this has not been confirmed.  The "color" issue contained 160 cards, and Bowman decided to jumbo size the card dimensions (now 2-1/2" x 3-3/4"), likely to compete with Topps larger sized cards.  The set has full color photographs on the front with thin white borders.  Names were not printed on the front, so the entire front is dedicated to the image.  The backs look awfully similar to 1952 Topps backs, with the player's name, biography, and stats included.  Despite being a small release, the set packs a punch with Hall of Famers.  Included in this set are Stan Musial, Pee Wee Reese, Mickey Mantle, Duke Snider, Yogi Berra, and Whitey Ford.  There is also a multiplayer card featuring Mantle/Bauer/Berra peering out of the dugout.  The "black and white" set looks exactly the same as the "color" set except without color.  There are 64 cards in total.  It is primarily commons, with Casey Stengel being the biggest name.
