1914 Cracker Jack Baseball Card Guide

1914-Cracker-Jack-Baseball-Joe-Jackson-103-back.jpg

Set Description

If ever a product needed to produce baseball cards it had to be Cracker Jacks.  In 1908 the famous "Take me out to the ball game" song came out and of course mentions "Buy me some peanuts and Cracker Jacks".  Well the first issue of cards from Cracker Jacks definitely did not disappoint.  The set consists of 144 different cards all of which were inserted into boxes of Cracker Jacks. Because of this it is not uncommon to see caramel stains on the cards.  Each card, printed on thin stock paper,  consists of a tinted color image of the front with a bright red background.  Above the image "Cracker Jack ball players" is listed.  Below the image is the player's last name and team.  The back contains a player biography and advertisement.  Because these cards could only be obtained by buying a box of the product, high grade examples are extremely rare given that they were exposed to the candy.  This set is loaded with hall of famers but is headlined by the highly desirable Joe Jackson card as well as Ty Cobb. 1914 was also the only year of the the "horizontal pitching" image of Christy Mathewson.  In 1915, Cracker Jack released another set, this time with 176 different cards.  The majority of the 1914 images were re-used, with several exceptions including the 1914 horizontal Mathewson, which was replaced by a portrait pose. Since there is no 1915 alternative, it is extremely sought after and valuable.
